Quote of the Week: Dancing with Skeletons

  • October 10, 2011 12:11 am

If you cannot get rid of the family skeleton, you might as well make him dance.

Note:  Many people think of their colleagues as family. If that isn’t the case in your organization, replace the word “family” with “office”, “company”, “department” or delete the word altogether.

As far as getting rid of a skeleton…..

Maybe no one will know. For a little while anyway.

But pretty soon, insiders will find it. And if it doesn’t scare them away, they’ll get the message that skeletons are okay in your organization and pretty soon, that closet will be packed.

Outsiders will find out pretty soon too. And it will certainly scare them away.

So for the sake of morale, productivity, customer loyalty and overall organizational performance…be a master of mistake management and make those skeletons dance.

Examples:

  • Customers of a newspaper described their delivery service as “horrible”. Instead of stuffing this feedback in a closet, the newspaper made this skeleton dance by creating and widely publicizing a Double Dog Dare Program.
  • Due to a computer transition at a directory company, there were many mistakes in the advertising section. Instead of allowing this skeleton to hide in the closet, the 5 Star Advertiser Program was created and implemented.
